Judgment on Jerusalem and the Nations

Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled,
    (A)the oppressing city!
She listens to no voice;
    (B)she accepts no correction.
(C)She does not trust in the Lord;
    she does not draw near to her God.

(D)Her officials within her
    are roaring lions;
her judges are (E)evening wolves
    that leave nothing till the morning.
(F)Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men;
(G)her priests (H)profane what is holy;
    they do violence to the law.
The Lord within her (I)is righteous;
    he does no injustice;
every morning he shows forth his justice;
    each dawn he does not fail;
    but (J)the unjust knows no shame.

(K)“I have cut off nations;
    their battlements are in ruins;
I have laid waste their streets
    (L)so that no one walks in them;
their cities have been made desolate,
    without a man, without an inhabitant.
(M)I said, ‘Surely you will fear me;
    (N)you will accept correction.
Then your[a] dwelling would not be cut off
    according to all that I have appointed against you.’[b]
But (O)all the more they were eager
    to make all their deeds corrupt.

“Therefore (P)wait for me,” declares the Lord,
    “for the day when I rise up to seize the prey.
For my decision is (Q)to gather nations,
    to assemble kingdoms,
to pour out upon them my indignation,
    all my burning anger;
for in the fire of my jealousy
    (R)all the earth shall be consumed.

The Conversion of the Nations

“For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples
    to (S)a pure speech,
that all of them may call upon the name of the Lord
    and serve him with one accord.
10 (T)From beyond the rivers (U)of Cush
    my worshipers, the daughter of my dispersed ones,
    shall bring my offering.

11 (V)“On that day (W)you shall not be put to shame
    because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me;
for then (X)I will remove from your midst
    your proudly exultant ones,
and (Y)you shall no longer be haughty
    in my holy mountain.
12 But I will leave in your midst
    a people (Z)humble and lowly.
(AA)They shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord,
13     (AB)those who are left in Israel;
they (AC)shall do no injustice
    and speak no lies,
(AD)nor shall there be found in their mouth
    a deceitful tongue.
(AE)For they shall graze and lie down,
    and none shall make them afraid.”

Israel's Joy and Restoration

14 (AF)Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion;
    shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
    O daughter of Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away the judgments against you;
    he has cleared away your enemies.
(AG)The King of Israel, (AH)the Lord, is in your midst;
    you shall never again fear evil.
16 (AI)On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
“Fear not, O Zion;
    (AJ)let not your hands grow weak.
17 (AK)The Lord your God is in your midst,
    (AL)a mighty one who will save;
(AM)he will rejoice over you with gladness;
    he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.
18 I will gather those of you who mourn (AN)for the festival,
    so that you will no longer suffer reproach.[c]
19 Behold, at that time (AO)I will deal
    with all your oppressors.
And (AP)I will save the lame
    and gather the outcast,
and I will change (AQ)their shame into (AR)praise
    and renown in all the earth.
20 (AS)At that time I will bring you in,
    at the time when I gather you together;
for I will make you renowned and praised
    among all the peoples of the earth,
(AT)when I restore your fortunes
    before your eyes,” says the Lord.

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

44 “The kingdom of heaven (A)is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy (B)he goes and sells all that he has and (C)buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding (D)one pearl of great value, (E)went and sold all that he had and (F)bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is (G)like a net that was thrown into the sea and (H)gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, (I)men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at (J)the end of the age. The angels will come out and (K)separate the evil from the righteous 50 (L)and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place (M)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

New and Old Treasures

51 (N)“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every (O)scribe (P)who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who (Q)brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, 54 (R)and coming to (S)his hometown (T)he taught them in their synagogue, so that (U)they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 (V)Is not this (W)the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not (X)his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And (Y)they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, (Z)“A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, (AA)because of their unbelief.

God's Wrath Against Nineveh

(C)The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
    the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
(D)the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
    and (E)keeps wrath for his enemies.
(F)The Lord is slow to anger and (G)great in power,
    and (H)the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
(I)His way is in whirlwind and storm,
    and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
(J)He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
    he dries up all the rivers;
(K)Bashan and (L)Carmel wither;
    the bloom of (M)Lebanon withers.
(N)The mountains quake before him;
    (O)the hills melt;
the earth heaves before him,
    (P)the world and all who dwell in it.

(Q)Who can stand before his indignation?
    Who can endure the heat of his anger?
His wrath (R)is poured out like fire,
    and (S)the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
(T)The Lord is good,
    (U)a stronghold in the day of trouble;
(V)he knows those who take refuge in him.
    But (W)with an overflowing flood
he will make a complete end of the adversaries,[a]
    and (X)will pursue his enemies into darkness.
What (Y)do you plot against the Lord?
    (Z)He will make a complete end;
    trouble will not rise up a second time.
10 For they are (AA)like entangled thorns,
    like drunkards as they drink;
    (AB)they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
11 From you came one
    (AC)who plotted evil against the Lord,
    a worthless counselor.

12 Thus says the Lord,
“Though they are at full strength and many,
    (AD)they will be cut down and pass away.
(AE)Though I have afflicted you,
    I will afflict you no more.
13 And now (AF)I will break his yoke from off you
    and will burst your bonds apart.”

14 The Lord has given commandment about you:
    (AG)“No more shall your name be perpetuated;
from (AH)the house of your gods I will cut off
    the carved image and the metal image.
(AI)I will make your grave, (AJ)for you are vile.”

15 [b] (AK)Behold, upon the mountains, (AL)the feet of him
    who brings good news,
    who publishes peace!
(AM)Keep your feasts, O Judah;
    (AN)fulfill your vows,
(AO)for never again shall the worthless pass through you;
    he is utterly cut off.

The Ministry of Apostles

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and (A)stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. (B)For I am not aware of anything against myself, (C)but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore (D)do not pronounce judgment before the time, (E)before the Lord comes, (F)who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. (G)Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers,[a] that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may (H)be puffed up in favor of one against another. For who sees anything different in you? (I)What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you! For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, (J)like men sentenced to death, because we (K)have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. 10 (L)We are fools for Christ's sake, but (M)you are wise in Christ. (N)We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. 11 To the present hour (O)we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and (P)buffeted and (Q)homeless, 12 and we (R)labor, working with our own hands. (S)When reviled, we bless; (T)when persecuted, we endure; 13 when slandered, we entreat. (U)We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, (V)the refuse of all things.

14 I do not write these things (W)to make you ashamed, but to admonish you (X)as my beloved children. 15 For (Y)though you have countless[b] guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For (Z)I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 I urge you, then, (AA)be imitators of me. 17 That is why (AB)I sent[c] you Timothy, (AC)my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ,[d] (AD)as I teach them everywhere in every church.
